Massimo Carrera backs Antonio Conte to succeed at Inter Milan

Former Spartak Moscow boss Massimo Carrera has backed Antonio Conte to take over the reigns at Inter Milan and believes he would bring success for the Nerazzurri despite his Juventus background. The Italian has been out of duty since his dismissal at Chelsea last summer but he has been heavily touted to take up the managerial role at the San Siro giants.

Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport, Carrera, who was a former teammate of Conte at Juventus, said that Conte would stay 100 percent committed to the job at hand with the Nerazzurri despite his close association with the Serie A holders, he quipped: “This is a world made up of professionals. He would be Inter’s number 1 supporter, but it is normal that it would be like this. He is one of the best coaches in the world, he could give an important impression to the team.”

Inter are currently occupying the fourth position on the Serie A table and they are just one point ahead of AC Milan in the race for the final Champions League spot. As such, they face the compulsion to win their final game of the season against Empoli to ensure that they can return to the elite competition for the second year running.

Meanwhile, there are doubts regarding the future of Luciano Spalletti beyond the summer and the recent reports linking Conte with the club suggest that the former could be axed from the helm. The former Roma boss has been a tremendous job to put Inter on the verge of making the Champions League for the second-straight campaign, but the club are said to be more ambitious and want to make a strong challenge for the Serie A crown next term. Conte has been deemed to have held a secret meeting with the Nerazzurri board over the potential vacancy.
