INTER: CHAMPIONS LEAGUE WINNING RUN ENDED

Inter Milan were on a three-match winning run in the Champions League before they met hosts Real Madrid at the Estadio Santiago Bernebeu on Tuesday night. In the end, Inter Milan lost 2-0 to their Spanish opponents with ten men thereby putting an end to their victory run.

The Italian champions had started Group D with one point from the first two games before embarking on a three-game winning run with victories over Moldovan side Sheriff Tiraspol and Ukrainian team Shakthar Donetsk. The run included back-to-back wins over newcomers Sheriff at home and away from home.

Real Madrid were also on a three-game winning streak ahead of the Inter Milan game and they were able to take it to four wins on the bounce with the goals from Toni Kroos and Marco Asensio either side of the break and against an Inter Milan side who had NicoloBarella sent off for violent conduct.

Retired German international Kroos scored the opening goal of the game to write his name into the history books as the man who scored the 1,000th European goal for Real Madrid.

Spanish La Liga leaders Real Madrid have won their last nine games in all competitions and the win over Inter Milan sealed their place in the knockout stage as Group D winners, while the Nerazzuri would be in the knockout stage as the second team from the same group. While Real Madrid would be seeded for the first knockout stage draw in Nyon, Switzerland on Monday, Inter Milan won't be seeded for the draw.

While Inter Milan would be in the knockout stage draw, city rivals AC Milan won't be there after they failed to qualify from Group B partly due to the 2-1 defeat to Liverpool. The Rossoneri lost to the Reds despite taking the lead through England international defender FikayoTomori. Mohamed Salah and DivockOrigi scored either side of the half-time break to turn the game on its head.
